UH's Bloch named NCAA swimmer of the week

Cheyne Bloch was named the NCAA Division I Male Swimmer of the Week for the week ending Nov. 9 by College Swimming.com.

Bloch, a senior from Wailuku, won two events at the California dual meet Nov. 7. He won the 100 breast in 54.94 and the 200 breast in 2:00.49. He also posted the meet's fastest 50 breaststroke split on the third-place 200 medley relay team.

Wahine climb in swim rankings, UH men drop: The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine swimming and diving team climbed one spot to No. 24 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll released Wednesday. The UH men's team dropped four spots to No. 17. Hawaii hosts the Duke men's and women's teams tonight at 6 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Center.

Loo's kick helps Idaho State upset No. 13 Utah

Jen Loo, a freshman midfielder from Mililani, was one of five Bengals to convert a shootout penalty kick as Idaho State upset 13th-ranked Utah 1-0 yesterday in Salt Lake City in the first round of the NCAA College Cup.

The teams played to a 0-0 double overtime tie, but the Bengals did not miss a penalty kick while ISU goalkeeper Shannon Boyle stopped one of Utah's attempts.

BYUH volleyball team climbs to No. 2 in D-II

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team moved closer to the top spot in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national poll.

The Seasiders are second, 13 points behind No. 1 UC San Diego.

The Seasiders' final regular-season match is tomorrow against Hawaii Pacific at 7:30 p.m. at the Andrew's Priory Gym.

Seasider receives academic honor: Yu Chuan Weng, an outside hitter for Brigham Young-Hawaii, has received All-Academic District VIII College Division second-team honors from the College Sports Information Directors Association.

Perkins, DeSoto ousted at Oxbow Longboard

MANU BAY, New Zealand >> Hawaii's Bonga Perkins and Duane DeSoto both were beaten earlier today in the quarterfinals of the Oxbow Pro Longboard $50,000 tournament.

Perkins, the No. 1 seed, had two eight-plus scores, but South African Mathew Moir countered with a 9.25 ride to take the lead. DeSoto's opponent, Joel Tudor, now leads this year's longboard world title race with the win.

Hawaii's Kekoa Uemura bowed out in round three.
