Islanders' White moves up to AFL

Former Hawaiian Islanders fullback/linebacker Josh White has signed a three-year contract with the Arena Football League's New York Dragons, the Dragons announced yesterday.

"They said they needed to upgrade that position and they gave me the chance," White said in a release. "I'm ready to show them what I'm made of."

The AFL is a step up from its minor league, the Islanders' af2. The Islanders and Dragons share the same ownership. White is a Farrington graduate and played his college football at California.

Hawaii's Gowdy notches NCAA qualifying mark

LOS ANGELES >> Hawaii diver Mike Gowdy recorded an NCAA qualifying mark yesterday in finishing fifth in the 3-meter preliminaries at the University of Southern California Trojan Invitational.

Gowdy made the NCAA Championships with a 495.45 score and went on to finish fourth in the finals. Teammate Jonathan Coyle was seventh.

Seasiders move up in water polo

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team moved up to No. 14 in this week's National Collegiate Top 20 poll.

The Seasiders (12-6) have one regular-season match remaining, a 9:30 a.m. contest at Chaminade tomorrow.
