Rebel yell

Richard Li came back from Los Angeles several months ago and couldn't find a nightclub event in Honolulu that had the blend of indie rock, Brit pop and electroclash ambience he was looking for. So the solution, he decided, was to create one himself.

Club Rebel Rebel!

Where: Club Pauahi, 80 S. Pauahi St.

When: 9:30 p.m. today

Admission: $5, 18 and over

Call: 521-7252

Li quietly introduced Club Rebel Rebel! as a monthly music event at Club Pauahi in August and the concept clicked with a similarly minded clientele. The fourth rebellious event gets underway at 9 p.m. tonight.

"The situation in Hawaii was just so grim that I decided to make my own (event)," Li said, "just to mimic what I'd experienced in L.A. It's foremost an indie rock scene club ... but also Brit pop bands and also electroclash, and finally a lot of '80s pop.

"A lot of it is what you'd expect in indie clubs in L.A. like Club Bang! and Club Underground, (but) there's nothing like that in Hawaii."

So expect a fun and diverse playlist that includes Rapture, Hot Hot Heat, the Faint, Pulp and The Smiths.

Li created Club Rebel Rebel! to be more than a record party or club crawl. Tonight's festivities includes the final set by punksters Buckshot Shorty, and on-going giveaways of CDs, T-shirts, stickers and posters courtesy of Tommy Boy Records, First Kiss, Filter magazine and "Sheriff Norm" Winter from Jelly's.

For instance, Filter is providing copies of a "Gimmie Skelter" compilation featuring such bands as Weezer, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Le Tigre, The Icarus Line, Mudhoney and Cave In. Tommy Boy is donating copies of the new album by Fannypack, three 17-year-old girls from Brooklyn, New York. Li describes them as "like L'Trimm," the South Florida duo whose one claim to fame was the 1988 cruisers' anthem, "Cars With the Boom." (Fannypack themselves have had a monster hit this year with the retro club banger "Cameltoe.")

Want more? Li also hooked up with First Kiss to snag some promo product from the New York new wave/pop/punk band Stellastarr.

Li also invites people to bring a mix CD to the party, leave it at the door and receive someone else's mix CD on the way out.
