10 Hawaii groups get Maile Awards

Ten Hawaii organizations received Maile Awards for their contributions toward growing tourism and maintaining the state's quality of life, during the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau's annual luncheon yesterday.

Awardees include E.K. Fernandez Shows, Soto Mission of Hawaii, the Korean Centennial Committee, Daughters of Hawaii, Akina Aloha Tours Inc. of Maui, Iolani Sportswear, Ironman Triathlon World Championship, Kapalua Bay Hotel & Ocean Villas on Maui, Na Wahine O Ke Kai and the Waikiki Community Center.

Some refi costs may be deductible

Taxpayers who refinanced their home mortgages this year may be eligible to deduct some costs associated with their loans, the IRS said.

If the refinancing is related to home improvement or a home purchase, any points can be deducted in the year they were paid.

To figure the annual deduction amount, divide the total points paid by the number of payments to be made over the life of the loan. Usually this information is available from the lender.
