Shark victim’s
condition better

The Kauai teen surf star who lost an arm to a shark last week is steadily recovering, her family says.

Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton is "getting stronger and doing well," her father, Tom Hamilton, said yesterday.

"She walked the length of the (hospital) hallway. ... Her complexion is looking good. She's more talkative and much more alert."

Hamilton underwent a second surgery Monday after initial surgery on Friday, the day she lost her left arm to what is believed to be a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing on Kauai's north shore.

Doctors earlier said Hamilton may return home this week. Her parents say she is slowly regaining her appetite.

"All she wanted this morning was a smoothie, which the hospital made up for her," said Cheri Hamilton, Bethany's mother. "She also canceled her regular lunch but requested papaya, which she enjoyed every bit of."
