Two mainland visitors die in waters off Kauai

Two 79-year-old men visiting from the mainland died in separate incidents in waters off Kauai on Monday, fire rescue officials said.

The first incident occurred some time before 10 a.m. between Poipu Beach and the Waiohai Hotel. Lifeguards pulled the man out of the water and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The man was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second incident was off Salt Pond on the west side of Kauai near Hanapepe.

Fire officials said lifeguards used a personal watercraft to retrieve the victim's body about 200 yards from shore about 4:20 p.m.

He was taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second victim appeared to have been snorkeling, a fire official said.

Kailua man arrested for alleged abuse

Police arrested a 41-year-old Kailua man at his home yesterday after he allegedly grabbed his estranged 40-year-old wife by the hair and threw her on the rocks at the beach Friday.

Police said the husband asked his wife to meet him at Yokohama Bay Beach Park on the Waianae Coast and the two got into an argument.

Police said the husband prevented his wife from leaving by grabbing her hair and throwing her on the rocks.

The two later drove to Waianae, where the woman ran from the vehicle while they were stopped in traffic, and called police.

Kailua police arrested the man yesterday for kidnapping, abuse of a household member and violating a protective order.

Pearlridge bank heist suspect depicted

Honolulu police have released a composite picture of a man suspected of robbing the Bank of Hawaii Pearlridge branch last week.

Police said the suspect walked into the branch at 98-211 Pali Momi St. on Thursday, demanded money at a teller window and then fled on foot. Witnesses told police the suspect might have had a handgun with him in the bank.

The suspect is described as in his 30s, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a slim build, long dark hair in a ponytail, mustache, goatee, brown eyes and brown complexion. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat with a horseshoe logo, white shirt, and denim jeans.

HPD seeks help to find missing woman

The Honolulu Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating 75-year-old Helen Hun of Waianae.

Police said Hun suffers from dementia and was last seen at her Alapaki Street home about 11 a.m. Monday. Police believe she may have boarded a city bus.

Hun is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 145 pounds, has white hair and brown eyes.

Man, 41, missing since Friday is found

Honolulu police have found 41-year-old Derrick Uyema, who was reported missing Friday.

Uyema was reported to have left a family court hearing in an emotionally distressed state last Wednesday and was not seen again. Police said he was found at 1 p.m. Monday and is back with family members.

Boy, 17, arrested for alleged sex assault

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old female student in a restroom at a Honolulu school in May.

The teenage boy faces second-degree sexual assault charges.

Police said the 18-year-old student was in the bathroom when the boy entered and shut the door behind him. The suspect then sexually assaulted her, police said.

Police said he was later located and identified. The teen was released Monday pending further investigation.

LEEWARD OAHU

Officials blame short for Ewa Beach fire

Fire officials said that an electrical short was the cause of a house fire yesterday on Oaniani Street in Ewa Beach. Damages were $1,400 to the structure and $600 to a heat pump.
