Saint Louis routs
Kamehameha

The Crusaders cruise to
a 51-19 victory for their fifth
straight Division I state berth

Saint Louis proved that talk of the demise of its football dynasty was premature.

The Crusaders (7-1, 6-1) won their 18th straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship by routing Kamehameha 51-19 last night before 10,845 at Aloha Stadium. They also earned their fifth consecutive berth in the Division I state tournament, which begins Nov. 21.

It's been a bad two weeks for Kamehameha. The Warriors (7-2, 5-2) had high hopes for their first league championship since 1979, but they were missing six starters who didn't play because of undisclosed inappropriate off-field behavior. An upset loss to Punahou last week also punched a hole in their title dreams.

Kekoa Paulsen, a Kamehameha spokesman, said the school is checking all the facts of the alleged incident before it comes forward with any information -- if it's appropriate to release any information at all.

"I'm not going to talk about anything but the game tonight," Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said. "We looked good at times, but we weren't consistent on either side of the ball and that hurt us."

The game was a stark contrast to the teams' first meeting in September, which the Warriors won 16-13. This one featured a wide-open Saint Louis offense that wasn't quite up to speed earlier in the season.

"Everybody believed," Crusaders coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "I'm really pleased with the kids' ability to show up. Some teams don't show up for the big game and they did. It really blew me away the way they produced with everything on the line."

As usual, the Crusaders' defense was menacingly tough. Defensive back Keao Monteilh broke up a handful of passes intended for the Warriors' big target, Waika Spencer, and returned an interception for a touchdown. Benjamin Soliven also slowed down Kamehameha's offense with two interceptions, while Nuipitane Nahalea added another pick.

"This was a big win ... 51-19 ... that's the biggest win we've had over Kamehameha since I've been on the team," Monteilh said. "Our defensive backs really stepped it up and our defensive line put a lot of pressure on and we all made tackles. We were ready ... we watch video and go over their plays every day for at least an hour. We've got to pick up our level of play and really bring it on in the states."

Kamehameha had no answer for the passing of Kealii Perbera and the running of B.J. Batts. Perbera threw for 256 yards and four TDs -- two each to Desmond Hanohano and Shaun Kauleinamoku. The Crusaders' receivers found huge holes in the Warriors' zone defense and it eventually set up the up-the-middle running of Batts, who gained 110 yards on 22 carries and a TD.

Makaala Kuewa's blocked punt and 5-yard return for a touchdown was a major turning point. It gave Saint Louis a 14-7 lead.

The Crusaders built a 23-13 halftime advantage and scored two quick second-half touchdowns to take command.

"They beat us in all three phases of the game and that blocked punt really set us back," Souza said.

Arceneaux was impressed with Kamehameha's grit.

"They've had to fight through distractions and this game was a lot closer ... don't let the score fool you," he said. "The ILH can be proud of these two teams."

Punahou 52, Pac-Five 14: John Morris completed 14 of 15 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns in two quarters to lead one of the hottest teams in the state to the ILH rout.

The Buffanblu (6-4, 4-3), coming off a big upset of Kamehameha last week, scored on seven of their nine first-half possessions.

Punahou created three Pac-Five first-half turnovers to fuel the rout. Alexander Chock and Chris Shiramizu intercepted Wolfpack quarterback Jordan Tani, while Jonathan Overton recovered a fumble caused by Jordan Moss.

In the second half, the Buffanblu's Jay Angotti and Matthew Kwock came through with picks and Overton and Moss each had a sack to thwart Pac-Five (2-6-1, 0-6-1) drives. Angotti scored Punahou's only second-half TD with a 55-yard return.

Two of Morris' TD passes went to Christopher Duncan, who caught four passes for 108 yards.

Tani completed 20 of 44 passes for the Wolfpack for 252 yards and a TD, but he threw four interceptions.

Punahou's Micah Strickland rushed for 114 yards on 11 carries and didn't play in the second half.

Ka Makani rode the shoulders of Michael Kopra to a first-round bye in the BIIF Division II playoffs.

Kopra's 19-yard touchdown run with 1:10 left in the third quarter tied the game at 13 and his extra-point kick proved to be the game winner. Kopra carried the ball for 103 yards as Ka Makani won for the first time at Konawaena since 1991.

HPA earned the bye in the Division II playoffs and will host the winner of this weekend's Honokaa-Konawaena game. A loss would've given Konawaena the bye and home field advantage, forcing Ka Makani to play Honokaa.

"The bye is huge," said HPA coach Tom Goodspeed. "No. 1, it gives us rest. No. 2, we don't have to play at their (Konawaena) house again."

Goodspeed said the time off will allow his team to work on their conditioning and "get our injured players back up, focus on discipline and winning that game."

HPA led 7-6 at the break before Konawaena rallied to take a 13-7 lead in the third.

Maui struck three times in the first quarter and added two more touchdowns in the second to lead 34-0 at halftime.

The Red Raiders ended the Menehunes' streak of 11 Kauai Interscholastic Federation titles with wins in the schools' two previous meetings this year, but Waimea got the last word as the two state tournament-bound teams concluded the regular season.

Waimea opened the scoring when running back Jordon Dizon hit Casey Barba for a 35-yard score in the first quarter. The Menehunes tacked on two more scores in the second quarter -- a 6-yard pass from Jon Palacio to Justin Estes and a 5-yard run by Lanikai Kanahele -- for a 20-0 halftime lead.

The Red Raiders rallied with scores in each of the final two quarters but fell a touchdown short in their homecoming game at Vidinha Stadium.

Kauai's next game will be on Nov. 21 in the Division I state tournament against the OIA champion. Kahuku and Kailua meet for that title Friday.

Waimea has a bye in the state Division II tournament and will host either Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Damien or the OIA runner-up at Vidinha Stadium on Nov. 28 in a semifinal.

The state finals will be played on Dec. 5 at Aloha Stadium.
