Dining around the islands

Hidden treasures to be found at the Pearl dining room

Enjoying each dining season at the Pearl at Leeward Community College requires some advance planning. The restaurant, staffed by culinary students, is open Wednesday through Friday for lunch only, and only for the length of each school semester.

But for those able to take advantage, the Pearl offers upscale dining for reasonable prices, with the added benefit that diners are helping students polish their skills.

The fall session will end in two weeks.

Chef/instructor Ian Risely, formerly of Niblicks at Ko Olina, planned menus showcasing various culinary regions. The Pacific Rim menu, available through Friday, offers appetizers such as Opah Tartar with Spicy Citrus Kim Chee ($4.95) and Warm Tenderloin of Beef Salad with Cucumbers and Mint ($5.95). Entrees include Fragrant Chicken Curry with Saffron Basmati Rice ($7.95) and Sautéed Breast of Duck with Orange Ginger Juice ($9.95).

The Pearl is also offering a $15 Thanksgiving buffet Nov. 12 to 14. The menu includes Eggs Benedict with Crab and Spinach, Butternut Squash and Maui Onion Quiche, baked salmon, ham and Ballotine of Turkey Stuffed with Sausage and Pecans. Salads and desserts included. Cost is $15.

Call 455-0298.
