Juggling bottles and
spewing flaming alcohol

THEY'RE not paying KHON-TV excellent man-about-town interviewer Manolo Mo-rales enough. I've always thought he did a fine job interviewing Everyman (or -woman) for what surely was the first time for most. The other day topped all. Morales agreed to learn to "flair bartend," like Tom Cruise in "Cocktail," and mastered juggling and balancing bottles and glasses like the pourers at Jackie Chan's new eatery will do. Then Jackie's managers Cache Bouren and Mike Graves decided he was ready for more daring feats. They taught him how to take a swig of 151-proof rum and spray it out of his mouth onto a torch, creating a funnel of fire clear to his mouth. His mouth felt a bit numb after that, Morales admitted, but give him a merit badge for bravery ...

SWITCHING channels, KHNL's weekend anchor Diane Ako is part Hawaiian and a Kamehameha graduate, but never felt closer to her roots than on a recent business trip to Kalaupapa, Molokai. It was her first trip there and she told pals, "I was stunned by the beauty." ... And like many of you, I was amazed to find that Perry & Price would be relocating their Saturday morning radio show to John Dominis. Amazed, because it appeared on Page One of the paper. Slow news day ...

ONE, singular sensation

IT'S been quite some time since a major show has found its way into Waikiki, but ONE, the show, will debut Nov. 10 in the Leahi Showroom of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. This show has a bit of everything. Entertainer Greg Gabaylo headlines the show. There is a cast of nine, including an emcee, four dancers, and Miss Hawaii 2000 Billie Takaki, who'll open each show with a song. There is dinner available and Kamaaina packages for those who want to overnight at $119 ...

VENERABLE actress Mary Frances Kabel-Gwin was admitted to Queen's for an intestinal blockage, but she developed appendicitis and was operated on for that while there. A friend who visited her there said she was hooked up to oxygen and morphine and couldn't take any solid food, but trooper that she is, she gets up and walks around. It'll take more than an appendectomy to keep that good old girl down ...

CONGRATS to country singer Dita Holifield and longtime boyfriend Ellsworth "Ells" Simeona, hitched this week in Las Vegas. It would be perfect if Elvis had performed the ceremony, but he was unavailable, being dead. Ells had singing gigs here everynight before the two headed for the wedding chapel in Vegas, so there was no time for a decent bachelor party or bridal shower. They had a combination party at Gordon Biersch where he was performing ...

Aisle be darned

ONE culture vulture who never misses a concert in Honolulu, Lisa Josephsohn was in N.Y. and missed Ballet Hawaii's presentation of the Mark Morris Dance Group at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. So she was particularly thrilled when, during intermission of "Boy from Oz" on the Great White Way, she ran into Ballet Hawaii's Judy Muncaster who gave her a review of the production ...
