Halloween just another
day in San Francisco

FRIDAY is Halloween, the happiest day of the year for some gregarious folks. I once spent Halloween in San Francisco, and all there agreed the dressing up and down on that day was no different than any other day. The same might be said of Hula's Bar & Lei Stand ... The Hawaiian Humane Society is forever coming up with clever names for their fund-raisers, but they'd be hard-pressed to beat "Howl-o-Ween" a dress-up event for dogs at Ward Warehouse ... Friday is certainly a day celebrated by makeup artist Bryan Furer. He's doing makeup for Halloween at Prosperity Corner on 12th Avenue in Kaimuki, readying celebrants for the Big Scary Day. No time off for Furer, however. On Monday he's helping Castle with its production of "Arsenic and Old Lace," opening Nov. 7 at Bright Theater in Kaneohe ...

Russian Dixie-land

WITH the Russian Navy in town -- well, not the whole Navy, but one ship -- the Russkies have been showing up at the strangest places. Over a dozen of them strolled into Dixie Grill on Ward Avenue and found themselves in the midst of dinosaurs, frogs, lions, ghosts, goblins and fairy princesses. It was the restaurant's annual keiki Halloween contest. The visitors were greatly amused, and even posed for photos with the costumed youngsters ...

STOP by Dave & Buster's Friday night while you're having a bite out on Halloween. Take in the "Dracula Dinner Show" after dinner and watch the believable Dracula impersonation of author Richard MacPherson, actor and drama teacher. He and his wife, Anne Marie MacPherson do an eerie variation of the play "Love Letters." ... Friday is also the final day on the job for Shari Anthony at the Pool Bar of the Ohana West Hotel but she says the only scary thing she anticipates on Halloween this year is having go home and spend more time with her husband, Joe Anthony ...

THE American Cancer Society's annual "Boots on the Beach" fund-raiser is Saturday night at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Emcee and auctioneer is radio talk show host Mike Buck, who's hoping to bring in a few. Bucks, that is ... On Saturday morning at 7 a.m. you can find people snarling and yelling at one another at Players on University Avenue. They'll be there, as they are each year, to root for either Michigan or Michigan State in the annual intra-state Big 10 rivalry ...

Roger and out

YOU'D almost have to know former KMPC D.J. Roger Carroll to full appreciate this little tale he just told me. He was enroute home from Boston to L.A. and had to change planes in the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. He had to use the men's room at the airport and entered a stall, just as another guy was walking into the adjoining stall. He heard the man say "Hi," and though a bit cautious, answered "Hi." The other guy said, "How ya doin'?" and Roger responded "Fine." The voice then said. "What's happening?" Roger explained he was changing planes before heading for L.A. Next the guy said, "I'll call you back -- some idiot in the next stall thinks I'm talking to him." Oops...
