Mililani slips past McKinley
in overtime to reach semis

The Trojans prevail 13-12 after
stifling the Tigers' 2-point conversion
try in OT

Jordan Apduhan swept left for a 20-yard touchdown and Darren Smith kicked the extra point to give host Mililani a thrilling 13-12 overtime victory over McKinley last night in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football playoffs.

In the overtime period, each team got one crack to score from the 20-yard-line. After Aphudan and Smith put the Trojans up 13-6, the Tigers (5-4) fought back to make it 13-12 on Abel Werner's 20-yard TD pass to Iakopo Taumua. They tried the 2-point conversion for the win, but Werner's pass to Michael Vasconcellos dropped to the ground to end it.

"We practiced so hard and prepared so hard for this," McKinley running back Quinton Sayers said. "One little pass, that's all that separated us at the end. I hope they (the Trojans) go all the way."

Werner's 11-yard touchdown pass to Taumua with 1:59 left in regulation tied it at 6 and a bad snap over the head of Werner -- the holder -- foiled McKinley's bid for the late victory and sent the game to OT. The 70-yard scoring drive swiped away -- at least temporarily -- what looked like certain victory for the Trojans (9-0).

"It was such a relief when we finally won it because it could have gone either way," Mililani coach James Millwood said. "We had a hard time on offense all night; McKinley made it really hard on us."

The Trojans qualified for their first appearance in the state Division I tournament and move on to play Kailua on Friday in the league semifinals.

Apduhan's winning score almost didn't happen. He was hit near the line of scrimmage and again at the 5-yard line, but managed to stay on his feet and dive into the corner of the end zone.

"This is absolutely great," Apduhan said. "I was able to bounce to the outside after that first hit, and on that second hit, I just tried to keep my legs pumping.

"I think we'll do great in the games coming up. We won as a team and this team has a lot of heart."

On the Tigers' 2-point conversion try, the Trojans called a timeout after they got a look at what formation McKinley set up in.

"They lined up in trips and we know they like to run that go route," Millwood said, "and luckily they didn't complete it."

One of two McKinley first-half turnovers led to Mililani's only touchdown in regulation. Mikhail Mabry's fumble recovery led to Peter Raneses' 16-yard scoring run off tackle for a 6-0 lead with 5:33 left before the break.

Smith's effective punting kept the Tigers from starting with decent field position. He had two punts of 50 yards and one of 42 in the opening half. He boomed a 61-yarder in the second half as well.

The Trojans' defense killed two long McKinley drives to keep the Tigers off the board early. On McKinley's first possession, Mililani halted an 82-yard march at the 5-yard line.

With less than three minutes to go in the half, Werner's accurate passing got the Tigers to the Mililani 26, but Matt Welsh picked off a Werner pass at the 13.

Mililani won the turnover battle 3-0.

Early in the second half, the Tigers had another golden chance to score, driving to the Trojans' 7. But they coughed up the ball and Mililani's Tony Butindaro recovered.
