Ready to take a relaxing
dip in the Ala Wai

IF UH grad student Marisa Toma has her way, isle water lovers may soon be able to don their favorite bathing suit and enjoy the water playground which is -- Ala Wai Canal? Yep. You see, while most folks have a favorite water spot, the Ala Wai is rarely, if ever, mentioned. But to Toma, it's No. 1. The U.S. EPA has awarded a $19,400 grant to UH researcher Tracy Sylva and Toma is involved with workshops to educate everyone about new technologies benefiting the Canal watershed. As for Sylva, she's researching bioremediation to break down Canal sediment contaminants and make them less toxic before removal. Who knows, the two may help turn the dreaded Ala Wai Canal into a new water playground ...

YOU don't think Hawaii-based bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman uses unconventional methods? What other bounty hunter puts out a press release telling where he's heading to catch an alleged sexual predator and kidnapper such as Andrew Garner. If he were smart, Garner would head for Mexico which still would like to find Chapman and stick him behind bars for his role in capturing Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in that country ...

Lee's genes

WHEN Bill Lee retired as Dean of Students at Iolani School after 40 years there, more than 800 turned out at a dinner in his honor at the Hilton's Coral Ballroom. Also roasting away were former headmaster David Coon, current headmaster Val Iwashita, teacher John Kay and business exec Alan Gin ...

Everyone has to play in the dark, which for once would seem to favor the person who doesn't hit the ball far off the tee, so he can find it. The tourney is part of the Maui Writers' Conference and is scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei ...
