Vulcans ranked seventh in golf poll

The Hawaii-Hilo golf team placed seventh in the nation according to the latest GolfStat NCAA Division II rankings.

The Vulcans own an adjusted scoring average of 72.91 and appear in the top 10 in three scoring categories, Par 3 (8th, 3.22), Par 4 (9th, 4.18) and Par 5 (T9th, 4.80).

The Vulcans have played two tournaments this season, finishing third at the 12-team Chico State Subway Invitational and tied for eighth place at the Western Washington Invitational. The team next plays in The Nelson Invitational hosted by Stanford on Oct. 24-26.

Blakely homers for U.S. squad

Darren Blakely hit a two-run homer Wednesday to help the United States defeat Panama 12-5 in a pool play game at the 2003 World Cup Baseball Tournament in Cuba.

It was the former University of Hawaii outfielder's first hit in three games. Blakely is 1-for-9 entering today's game against France.

Earlier the USA (3-0) beat Mexico 4-0 and Brazil 7-1.

BYU-Hawaii clinches Hale Trophy

Cory Weidauer scored three goals as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 16-8 in a men's water polo match last night at Kamehameha Schools' pool.

The 18th-ranked Seasiders improved to 11-6 with the win and clinched the Ralph Hale Trophy, awarded annually to winner of the BYU-Hawaii-Chaminade series. The Seasiders have won the trophy each of the last three years.

Vlada Stankovic, Jordan Brink, Vanja Kalabic and Sam Somerhalder each scored two goals for BYU-Hawaii.
