Rich Richardson designed the Hawai'i International Film Festival poster, available for purchase beginning Oct. 21.

HIFF Executive Director Chuck Boller said of the striking image of a backlit woman, "We challenged Rich to design an image using classic motifs that were both striking and multiethnic that expressed empowerment for Asian women.

"We've been fortunate over the years to have some of Hawaii's finest artists design our posters and this year is no different."

Past artists have included Pegge Hopper, John Young, Eddy Y, Dong Kingman, Madge Tennent and Martin Charlot.

The posters will be available at the HIFF box office at Signature Dole Cannery Theatre, open from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 through 30, and from noon to 10:30 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sundays from Oct. 30 through Nov. 9.

Advance tickets will also be available for $8 general or $6 for HIFF members. Basic membership starts at $50 and includes six tickets. An all-movie pass membership starts at $250 and includes a pass to all movies, filmmaker receptions and award ceremonies.

The film festival is set to open Oct. 30 with a 6:30 p.m. screening of Robert Altman's new film "The Company" at Hawaii Theatre.

The film, starring Neve Campbell, tells the story of a woman struggling with the intense physical and emotional demands of becoming a principal dancer.

The closing night film, playing 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Hawaii Theatre, will be "The Barbarian Invasions," a winner at Cannes and opener for the Toronto Film Festival.

The film revisits the characters from writer-director Denys Arcand's 1986 film, "The Decline of the American Empire." Rémy (Rémy Girard) has always been a bon vivant, a lover of "wine, books, music and women, especially women." Even now that he's on his death bed Rémy has kept his sense of humor and his old friends drop in to say their good-byes.

Program guides are available at Blockbuster Video stores statewide. For more information, call 528-HIFF (4433) or www.hiff.org.

The festival will continue on the neighbor islands from Nov. 7 to 9.
