Panel OKs plan to make
surfing a high school sport

Surfing is one step closer to becoming a recognized high school sport.

A Board of Education committee unanimously voted yesterday to move the issue to a full board decision later this year.

The policy would allow the Department of Education to outline the rules and regulations for implementing the sport in Hawaii's public high schools.

More than 50 supporters of the surfing policy -- some of whom carried their messages on surfboards -- attended the Committee of the Whole on Special Programs.

Though some of them signed up to speak, the board decided to hear no testimony that would re-hash the points made in past committee meetings.

The policy now goes to the Hawaii State Teachers' Association for review. It is expected to be on the Board of Education's agenda for this month or the next.
