[ TURNING POINT ]

Blocked kick killed Rice's momentum

Rice had battled its way back into last night's game against Hawaii with 21 unanswered points after the Warriors took a 24-0 lead.

That's where the score stood when Brandon Skeen lined up for a 37-yard field goal with 5:38 left in the third quarter.

But Abraham Elimimian sailed in unblocked from the Owls' left side and blocked Skeen's kick. It went to UH's Chad Kalilimoku, who juggled the ball and then ran it to the Hawaii 32.

The Owls never scored again, and turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter while the Warriors put up 17 more points.

[ COMING UP ]

Golden Hurricane can be dangerous

Tulsa (2-2) has already doubled its win total of last season. It got a bye this week before hosting Hawaii on Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference opener for the Golden Hurricane.

It seems Tulsa either gets blown out or blows out its opponent. It lost 49-10 at Minnesota and 45-13 at Arkansas before pounding Texas State 41-15 and Arkansas State 54-7, both at home.

Arkansas State entered the Tulsa game in the top 25 in most major defensive statistical categories, but the Golden Hurricane pounded away from the start and finished with 404 yards.

Quarterback James Kilian has thrived so far under new coach Steve Kragthorpe, who was the Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach last year. Kilian threw TD passes of 38 and 54 yards last week.

True freshman linebacker Nick Bunting was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week for returning an interception for a touchdown. A week earlier, sophomore defensive back Kedrick Alexander received the same award after a nine-tackle, one-interception game against Texas State.
