Asashoryu wins
3rd title of year
TOKYO -- Yokozuna Asashoryu beat Kaio (7-8) today to finish with a 13-2 record and win his third Emperor's Cup of 2003 and the fourth in his last six bashos at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
With one tournament remaining this year, Asashoryu has a .813 winning percentage.
Hawaii-born yokozuna Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani), who sat out the tournament with an injury, has a top winning percentage of .811 in 2001, and Hawaii's Akebono posted his career-best winning percentage of .844 in 2000, his final full season of competition.
Asashoryu has lost only six total bouts in his four tournament victories, going 14-1 in January 2003 and in November 2002, and finishing with 13-2 records in May and yesterday.
Chiyotaikai, Wakanosato, Kotomitsuki and Iwakiyama all finished tied for second place with 11-4 records. Chiyotaikai defeated Tochiazuma (10-5) yesterday to earn a tie for second.
