Secrets to Success

John-Paul Micek

From fear to freedom

If you attended this weekend's Women's Vision Expo, at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center and participated in our presentation, "From Fear to Freedom," you are well on your way toward turning your business fantasies into reality.

For those of you who weren't there, below is a brief excerpt of what I shared. These strategies will help you achieve your goals quicker than your competitors, who aren't aware of these success secrets.

No longer will you get bogged down in what may seem like a scary decision anytime you're required to do something different. Instead, you'll recognize the opportunities that come to your door disguised as a crisis.

Anytime a desire for change appears, a corresponding feeling of resistance comes up in the mind and body. Recognize this, and you'll be able to take the steps to overcome this natural occurrence.

Our brains are programmed to be efficient. In order to be efficient, they favor consistency and stability.

The best thing you can do to quickly subside the fears that come up anytime you think about doing something new is to make a specific type of list.

Most people know what a pro and con list is. You divide a sheet of paper in half. You put all the pros to making the move you're thinking about on one side. On the other side, you list all the cons to making the move.

We like to coach our clients to add a secret strategy to this pro and con method of decision making. We call this "The Pro/Con List to the Second Power."

After you create your pro and con list for making the move, you'll need to make another list. This is where you evaluate what the pros and cons are of staying exactly where you are for the next 10 years.

More often than not, this is the secret to getting off our okole and jumping into action sooner rather than later, achieving the life we were destined to live.

After you create your lists, ask yourself a few coaching questions to prompt you into action as quickly as possible. Ask, "What are the risks of not making the move? What are the negatives about my current situation that I have just been tolerating for far too long?"

Often, when I'm coaching someone who hates her current situation and wants to make a move desperately, but hasn't done anything toward making the move a reality, she also talks about her move by prefacing any suggestion to help her overcome a perceived challenge with the words, "Yes, but ..."

Think of the frog who died a slow and torturous death because he never realized he was boiling to death as the pot of water got hotter and hotter. Since it wasn't a drastic change, he stayed exactly where he was. If you threw him directly into the pot of boiling water, he'd immediately jump out because he would feel immediate pain.

The same is true when we put up with an environment that is unhealthy, yet continually make excuses for why we stay where we are.

Jump out of the pot today. Take massive action toward turning your goals into reality today. What would your life be like a decade from now if you fulfilled your desires?
