Yelling heard
before shots

A man guns down his
estranged wife, then himself,
at her apartment in Waipahu

The estranged husband of a Waipahu apartment complex manager shot and killed her late Wednesday, then took his own life.

Recardo Reyes, 39, smashed through the sliding glass door at the Nova Sunset Villa apartment of Stephanie Reyes, 34, about 11 p.m., according to police.

He dragged her from the living room to the master bedroom and shot her with a rifle before turning the gun on himself.

Homicide Lt. William Kato said Stephanie Reyes' three teenage children ran out of the apartment when the shots were fired.

Nearby residents said they had heard the man yelling, "This is what you wanted. Look at what you made me do."

Allison Goeas, who lives behind the apartment building, said she heard someone yelling before the gunshots were fired. After the third gunshot, Goeas said, the yelling stopped.

The Honolulu Police Department's Specialized Services Division, along with hostage negotiators, arrived two hours later in case there was an armed suspect still inside the apartment.

Officers entered the home at 94-207 Waipahu St. after there was no response and found the couple dead.

Kato said the children are staying with their biological father.

According to neighbors, Stephanie Reyes wanted a divorce from her husband. Police said they had separated three to four months ago.

Witnesses said there might have been some sort of domestic violence several weeks ago, Kato said. However, no police report was made.

Police said Recardo Reyes was a pig hunter and chicken fighter. His last known address was in Kapolei.

State records show that Reyes had eight petty misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges involving cruelty to animals and possessing gaffs -- knives tied to roosters used during chicken fights.

This is the second time Nova Sunset Villas has been the scene of a murder-suicide case.

In September 1999, Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Richard A. Donovan shot and killed his wife, Maryjane, and a 27-year-old man police believed had been having an affair with his wife. Donovan later killed himself at his home at Iroquois Point.
