Heavy rains islandwide last week dropped water usage an average of 9.5 million gallons a day by reducing the need for landscape watering and irrigation.

From Sept. 11 to Wednesday, consumption stood at about 159.6 million gallons of water a day, down from 169 million gallons the previous week, according to statistics released yesterday by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

Last week's consumption was 20 million gallons a day lower than the same period last year. Water usage in all six Oahu water districts was down.

The biggest drop was in the Honolulu water district, where consumption went down by 2.5 million gallons per day.

Board officials said the consumption drop helped to nudge water levels up at key water monitoring stations.

But as drought conditions persist, the board is asking residents to continue voluntarily restricting water use.

The board asked consumers on Aug. 3 to restrict their irrigation and lawn and landscape watering to Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
