College fair to take place at Ala Wai Club House

A college fair featuring representatives from some of the top colleges in the country will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course Club House.

Students, parents and counselors are invited to the free event, sponsored by College Connections Hawaii. More than two dozen local and mainland institutions are participating.

"The goal of this fair is to give Hawaii's students access to more colleges -- including some of the country's most prestigious schools," said Wren Wescoatt, College Connections executive director.

Home fire causes $30,000 in damage

A fire in the attic of a Maunawili home last night caused an estimated $30,000 in damage.

The fire was contained minutes after firefighters responded to the 1066 Maunawili Road home at about 6:40 p.m.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Candle causes blaze at Kapolei house

An unattended candle caused a fire at a Kapolei home yesterday, causing $4,500 in damage.

The fire at 91-223 Hokuimo Place started at 6:50 p.m. in an upstairs bedroom and was under control by 7:03 p.m.

No one was home at the time of the incident.

2 suspects arrested for alleged burglaries

Big Island police have arrested two men suspected of committing several burglaries in the Kona area and are searching for a third suspect.

Officers arrested a 30-year-old Hilo man and a 28-year-old Kailua-Kona man yesterday.

While executing a search warrant on the apartment of one of the suspects, police found numerous electronic items, jewelry and other items believed to have been stolen.

Kona-area residents who have recently been burglarized and have had jewelry or electronic items stolen are asked to call Detective Juergen Canda of the West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4230.

Head-on crash closes Honoapiilani Highway

A head-on collision between a car and a pickup truck last night on Maui's Honoapiilani Highway near McGregor Point critically injured one person and closed the road for hours.

The accident happened about 7 p.m. A second victim was in good condition. Both were taken to area hospitals. Police did not yet have the names or ages of those involved in the accident.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
