Loggins, isle stars
sparkle at Longhi’s


People lucky enough to be in Longhi's at Ala Moana Center Monday night were treated to a "million dollars" worth of entertainment by Kenny Loggins and top island performers. Emme Tomimbang was hostess for the musical treat and John Browning, who digs good music with a passion, put up the bucks. The party was to release Kenny's "It's About Time" CD and will be shown on Emme's "Island Moments" program at 7 p.m. Wednesday on KGMB. Kenny had the audience in the palm of his hands as he sang songs from his new CD and old hits. An accomplished speaker, he brought people up to date on what he has been doing and told humorous stories. The Makaha Sons, Hapa and Jordan Segundo performed both with Kenny and as separate acts. All were excellent. Hearing the Sons do "Hiilawe" and "I'll Remember You," Promoter Tom Moffatt said, "These guys should be in a major hotel in Waikiki every night." High praise for the Sons from a man who knows what he is talking about. At the end, Kenny and all the entertainers, plus Emme and Browning, sang and jammed on "Your Mama Don't Dance" and had people dancing in the aisles. Chai books Makaha Sons

It's not a Waikiki hotel, Tom, but the Makaha Sons are booked at Chai's at Aloha Tower Sept. 25 and 26. Moon Kauakahi and brothers John and Jerome Koko are sounding great. Chai has Hapa -- Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau -- another hot group, booked Friday ... Don't forget the Honolulu Symphony's "A Night in Spain" this evening on La Pietra's Great Lawn. Stuart Chafetz will conduct. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and dine at tables or on blankets. ...

Guest Chef Celestino Drago will prepare modern Italian cuisine at the Bali in the Hilton Village Sept. 26. Drago owns restaurants in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pasadena and West Hollywood. The cost is $55, call 941-2254 ...

California Pizza Kitchen founders Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield have opened a new restaurant concept, "L.A. Food Show," featuring home-style comfort food. Larry and wife, Joni, were on Maui and Oahu recently looking for more CPK and Food Show sites. Those who think they have a site here should call CPK's Carlos Delgado at 306-8784. Dave Dwyer, G.M. of Kahala CPK (top revenue producer in the chain) is moving up to be regional director for CPK in Northern California. They must have made Dave an offer he could not refuse as he has turned down promotions before because he didn't want to leave Hawaii ...

Cooking with Chef Robin

This month's "In The Kitchen With Chef Robin" at Palomino next Saturday has Robin Uyeda giving a lesson on preparing kiawe grilled hoisin duck braised with pineapple fried rice and braised choi sum at 3 p.m. He will also give instruction on two other courses that will also be in the wine dinner after the cooking session. The $50 cost includes the dinner with wine from Better Brands. A $20 Palomino gift card and a T-shirt is included in the gift pack. That's a good deal for 50 bucks.
