SAN DIEGO >> Keith Lockhart came through with an unexpected clutch hit for the San Diego Padres.

With the San Francisco Giants closing in on a three-game sweep, Lockhart's pinch-hit, two-run single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning -- his first hit since June 29 -- lifted the San Diego Padres to a 5-4 win last night.

"I feel like it's my first week of spring training," said Lockhart, who was activated from the disabled list on Aug. 29 after missing nearly two months with a strained lower back.

"When you're out for two months, it's hard to get situated," said Lockhart, whose hit off Tim Worrell helped the Padres win for just the fourth time in 15 games this season against the NL West-leading Giants.

J.T. Snow homered in the top of the 10th to give San Francisco a 4-3 lead. Snow hit a 2-2 pitch off Rod Beck for his seventh home run.

Mike Matthews (6-4) got the final out of the 10th for the win.

In the bottom of the inning, Brian Giles led off with a single, Phil Nevin walked and the runners advanced on Gary Matthews Jr.'s groundout. Mark Kotsay was intentionally walked, and Lockhart followed with a single down the first-base line on a 3-2 pitch from Worrell (4-4).

"When I first hit it, I thought it was going to be right at J.T.," Lockhart said. "I was just trying to be aggressive and hit the ball hard."

Snow, the six-time Gold Glove winner at first base, was upset afterward because of where he was positioned.

"I was moved from where I wanted to play," Snow said. "I was told to play somewhere else. I was told to play over a couple of steps toward the hole, that's why I was upset."

Snow refused to identify who told him to play off the line.

"If I play where I want to play and I know I should play, that play is made and we probably make a double play and win the game," he said.

San Francisco manager Felipe Alou disagreed.

"If he makes the play on the line, we don't think we were going to get a double play," Alou said.

Waipahu alumnus Williams lasted six innings for the Giants, giving up three runs -- two earned -- on five hits.
