WARNER BROS.
Nicolas Cage, left, plays a con man whose life is turned upsidedown when his daughter, played by Alison Lohman, decides to make an unannounced visit in "Matchstick Men."

"Matchstick Men" >> Nicolas Cage stars as a phobia-addled con man who, with his protege (Sam Rockwell), is on the verge of pulling off a lucrative swindle, but the unexpected arrival of his teenage daughter (Alison Lohman) disrupts his carefully ordered life and jeopardizes his high-risk scam. Directed by Ridley Scott. (PG-13)

"Cabin Fever" >> Five college friends retreat to a remote cabin in the woods for a weekend of drinking and carousing, only to have a delirious stranger covered in bloody sores crash their party. He touches one of them, and she, too, becomes the victim of a flesh-eating bacteria. The remainder of the group tries to protect themselves from further infection by locking her in a shed. But fear of contagion makes them turn on each other. (R)

"Once Upon a Time in Mexico" >> Robert Rodriguez finishes his "El Mariachi"/"Desperado" trilogy, as his mythic guitar-slinging hero (Antonio Banderas) is approached by a CIA agent (Johnny Depp) who wants him to assassinate a powerful drug cartel leader (Willem Dafoe) planning a coup d'etat against the president of Mexico. Salma Hayek co-stars. (R)

Murad talks skin care

Reservations are being taken for personalized Murad Method Skin Analysis to be conducted at Sephora, Ala Moana, by Dr. Howard Murad, a board-certified dermatologist, pharmacist, CEO and founder of Murad Inc., and author of "The Murad Method: Wrinkle-Proof, Repair, and Renew Your Skin with the Scientifically Proven Program" (St. Martin's Press).

Murad will be sharing his "inclusive" skin-care approach to anti-aging before heading off to Maui's LifeFest event Friday through Sunday. He and his team of experts will answer questions, conduct skin analyses and customize a personal skin-care regimen between 2 and 5 p.m. Thursday.

Murad believes that healthy skin is a reflection of total wellness, inside and out, and that it is possible to repair and rejuvenate the skin while slowing and even reversing the damage of aging.

Reservations are required. Call 944-9797. There is a fee of $35 which can be applied toward Murad product purchases after the consultation.

'Art of Rice' onstage

Leeward Community College opens its fall season Saturday with "Art of Rice," a collaborative work of 11 international artists representing China, India, Indonesia, Japan and the Dominican Republic, presented in cooperation with the East-West Center.

The Art of Rice Traveling Theater includes a creative integration of classical and experimental techniques featuring Chinese opera; gamelan, taiko and Burmese drum circle music; Trung puppetry; dance; and drama.

The performance takes place at 8 p.m. Through a combination of traditional and contemporary performing techniques, "The Art of Rice" presents rice as a complex metaphor representing the balance (and imbalance) of nature, spirit, ecology and humankind.

The project is the result of a three-year effort under the auspices of the Asian Pacific Performance Exchange of the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performances.

Ticket prices are $22 and $15 for students, seniors and military. Reserved seating is available. Call the LCC box office for further information, 455-0385.

The statewide tour will include performances on the Big Island at Kahilu Theatre, Waimea, on Friday and BYU-Hawaii next Tuesday; and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20.

Other productions during the season are:

>> "Complexions": One of the hottest modern dance companies in America, led by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richards, will bring their "new aesthetic in movement" to the stage at 8 p.m. Oct. 4.

>> "Manoa": The Hawaii legend lives through this evocative drama, a joint production of the University of Hawaii-LCC Arts and Humanities Department, under the direction of LCC professor Paul Cravath. Runs 8 p.m. Nov. 7, 8 and 13-15, and 4 p.m. Nov. 9.

>> "La Tania": Dance virtuoso La Tania and her company of flamenco dancers and musicians breathe the passion and fire of Spain's national dance, promising a stunning performance. At 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18.

>> Michael Moschen: The master manipulator of objects turns juggling into a balletic art. He's been called "a kind of dancer-physicist" by the San Francisco Examiner. He'll perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 22.

>> LCC Guitar Concert: 4 p.m. Nov. 16

>> LCC Holiday Choral Concert: 4 p.m. Nov. 30

>> Full Moon Madness: 7 p.m. Dec. 6
