THERE'S A NEW place to hear local music in town, and the good news is you'll never have to pay cover or wait until late at night to see a band get on stage.

Native Books/Na Mea Hawaii kicked off its weekly concert series, "Ha Mele Hei -- The Music of Hawaii Today," at the Ward Warehouse Amphitheater last weekend with Moana Chang and Boat Days, I. Mihana and Weldon Kekauoha and Tapa Groove.

The free performances will continue every Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ward Warehouse; next week's lineup features the Opihi Pickers and Stacie Taniguchi. Call 596-8885 for more details ...

PARTY PEOPLE did have to wait a little longer than expected on Saturday night for Mystic Rising to get on stage, but it was worth the wait to see Angela Manke, Daniel Pak and the rest of the local kids (now University of Washington graduates) tear things up at the Beach House.

The Seattle-based reggae band was invited to open for Natural Vibrations, who also performed that evening in celebration of their new album, "The Circle." Christian Yrizarry (one half of Ho'onu'a, who also have a new CD out in stores) and Star 101.9's Yung Jon Que were also on hand, partying like rock stars ...

I'M NOT MUCH of a wine drinker, but if I were, an upcoming series of wine education classes at Meritage in Restaurant Row sounds like it would be perfect for someone who wants to learn more about the grape juice people sip and spit out at tastings.

Presented in conjunction with Kapiolani Community College and Better Brands, each class focuses on a different type of wine and/or wine-making region. The first session, "Que Syrah Shiraz," is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Meritage. Subsequent classes are scheduled for Sept. 30, Oct. 14 and Nov. 11. Cost is $28 per session, and includes food prepared by chef Mariano Lalica. Call 734-9211 to register ...

THIS WEEKEND MARKS the start of the annual Aloha Festivals celebration, now in its 57th year. Things get started at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, when a procession is scheduled to leave Iolani Palace and make its way to Bishop Street downtown.

At 6 p.m. the annual Downtown Ho'olaule'a will begin, with four stages offering entertainment by the likes of Keahiwai, Sean Na'aua'o, Ale'a, Kapena and others. Check out our Weekend section on Friday for a complete schedule ...
