helping out at Mililani

Former University of Hawaii and Denver Broncos defensive lineman Maa Tanuvasa is working as a defensive line coach for the Mililani High School football team this season.

Tanuvasa, a former Trojans football player who graduated in 1988, won Super Bowl championships with the Broncos in 1998 and 1999, as well as the Holiday Bowl and a Western Athletic Conference championship with UH in 1992.

"He's a great addition to our program," said Mililani head coach James Millwood, who coached Tanuvasa during his high school years. "We've kept in touch through the years, and now that he's retired from the NFL, he expressed an interest in coaching this year.

"He brings a wealth of knowledge as well as techniques that I haven't seen before, and he brings enthusiasm to every practice. We're more than glad to have him."

Delos Reyes is Campbell AD: Former Waipahu and Nanakuli football coach Sam Delos Reyes is the new interim athletic director at Campbell High School, and he said yesterday that he will apply for the permanent position.

At the beginning of the school year, Delos Reyes took over for Duane Izumi, who left to join Kaimuki High School as a vice principal.

"They've (colleagues at Campbell) been very helpful and accommodating in helping me get situated," Delos Reyes said. "It was a very hard decision to leave Waipahu because I grew up in that community and made a lot of friends."

Delos Reyes coached the Marauders for nine years before stepping down after the 1998 season. He also coached the Nanakuli football team in the early 1980s and led the Golden Hawks to the 1983 Prep Bowl, where they lost to Saint Louis.

Delos Reyes was a teacher at Waipahu for 16 years before moving over to Campbell. He also taught at Nanakuli for 12 years and is a former Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball officials commissioner.

"Duane did a wonderful job here and I'm sure Sam will do a wonderful job," Campbell football coach Tumoana Kenessey said. "Each has their own style; Duane was a good fit and Sam is a good fit, too."
