Services for Dr. Allen Richardson on Sunday

Funeral services for Dr. Allen Richardson will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Kawaihao Church.

Richardson, a leader in sports medicine in Hawaii, died on Monday morning. He served as a team physician and senior orthopedic surgeon for the University of Hawaii athletic department since 1979 and was closely associated with the UH women's volleyball program for the past 25 years.

He also worked as a medical official for the swimming competition at the last six Olympic Games.

Lokahi conducting registration

The Lokahi Volleyball Club is holding registration tonight, Tuesday and next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt High School gym for all levels and ages.

Minors should be accompanied by a parent. For more information, call 523-2386.

HPAF awards scholarships

The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation has awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to six student-athletes.

Receiving scholarships are Keani Alapa, Marissa Nishimura, and Bronson Sismar, all attending Hawaii-Manoa; Samanta Alapa who is at Dana College; Brandi Barefoot, who attends Dixie State College and Kurt Nishimura who is at California Polytechnic.

Volunteers needed for library golf tournament

The Hawaii Library Foundation needs volunteers for its 10th annual Marriott Links to Literacy Golf Tournament being held Sept. 19 at the Ko Olina Golf Club.

A variety of part-day and all-day jobs are available. Especially needed are volunteers to work the contests at the par-3 holes during the afternoon. Golf experience is not necessary.

The deadline to volunteer is Wednesday. For information, call 837-8069 or fax request for information to 831-7899.

Long-distance canoe race set

The 2nd annual Steinlager Henry Ayau Men's International Outrigger Canoe Race will be held Sept. 21 starting at 9 a.m. at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai.

The event features approximately 60 nine-man crews racing 32 miles to the Ko Olina Resort & Marina.

The are four divisions, open koa and open, masters 35 plus and masters 35 plus in glass boats.

Volleyball event scheduled for Ko Olina

The Steinlager Light Volleyball Championship will be held Sept. 21 at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina's Lagoon 4.

This is an invitational grass exhibition featuring elite amateur players.

Action starts at 11 a.m. with the finals at 3 p.m. For more information, call Marc Haine at 220-8457.

School benefit run scheduled

The Niketown 5-kilometer run through Waikiki is scheduled for Oct. 5 with a 7 a.m. start at Niketown in the King Kalakaua Plaza.

The cost is $20 for adults 19 and up and $10 for youngsters 18 and under. Entry forms are available at Niketown or by calling 943-6453. The entry deadline is Sept. 20.

A 1-mile run around Fort DeRussy is available for youngsters 12 and under.

All proceeds go to Oahu's public and private schools (K-12) for athletic programs and play equipment.
