A ceremony to mark the 58th anniversary of the Japanese surrender ending World War II was held yesterday aboard the USS Missouri. Nico Schnitzler looked at a plaque on board the Missouri, dedicated to the spot on which the surrender of Japan took place.

Rear Adm. Bernard McCullough III, commander of Navy Region Hawaii, presented a citation from the secretary of the Navy commending the USS Missouri Memorial Association for its efforts. Receiving it was retired Vice Adm. Robert Kihune, chairman of the board of the association.

"Monster" Jake Kawasaki attempted to keep the ball away from another "Monster," Taylor Rodrigues yesterday. The Purple Dragons of Manoa (AYSO 6-year-olds) practiced at Manoa Valley District Park. In Monster, each player has a ball within set boundaries. Then another "Monster" tries to kick each player's ball out of bounds. The last player with his ball wins.

Firefighters finished up work on a fire at Koko Head District Park yesterday. The area was next to the bicycle motocross field. Police closed both entrances to the park
