Windward college
to offer class on chants


Windward Community College's Hawaii Music Institute is offering music recording and the art of Hawaiian chant writing, to add to its guitar and ukulele classes.

Classes run this Monday through Nov. 8.

Veteran recording engineer Tony Hugar, of Audio Resource, who has recorded movie soundtracks and some of the top local artists, will hold a three-session introductory course on audio recording. The course covers basic recording procedures.

Na Hoku Award-winning composer and chanter Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett will offer insights into his Hawaiian-language poetry and traditional writing style and help students compose their own songs.

Composer and digital music arranger Claire Rivero, of Home Baked Entertainment, will give an overview on computer-generated music, software and elements of her songs, namely percussion, melody, chords and bass.

>> Electric Bass Fundamentals, Luke Solatorio, Mondays, this Monday-Oct. 6, 6-7 p.m., $60.
>> Vocals and Performance, Melveen Leed, Tuesdays/Thursdays, next Tuesday-Oct. 16, 6-7 p.m., $120.
>> Beginning Slack-key Guitar, Ron Loo, Tuesdays, next Tuesday-Oct. 14, 5:30-7 p.m., $50 plus $5 lab fee.
>> Hula Fundamentals, Pamai Tenn, Tuesdays, next Tuesday-Sept. 30 and Oct. 7-28, 7-9 p.m., $25.
>> Beginning Ukulele, Byron Yasui, Saturdays, Sept. 13-Oct. 11, 10-11:30 a.m., $120.
>> Haku Mele, Frank Hewett, Tuesdays, Sept. 16-Oct. 21, 7-8 p.m., $85.
>> Guitar Basics and Beyond I, Mike Kato, Tuesdays, Sept. 16-Oct. 28, 6:30-8 p.m., $70 plus $10 lab fee.
>> Introduction to Jazz Fingerstyle Guitar, Mike Kato, Thursdays, Sept. 18-Oct. 30, 6:30-8 p.m., $70 plus $10 lab fee.
>> Business of Music, includes intellectual property rights, licensing, contracts and agreements, attorney William Meyer, Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.-noon, $60.
>> Intermediate Slack-key Guitar, George Kuo, Thursdays, Oct. 9-30, 7-9 p.m., $100.
>> Introduction to Recording, Tony Hugar, Saturdays, Oct. 25-Nov. 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $225.
>> Computer-aided Music, Part I: overview of MIDI, use of ANVIL software, Part II: elements of songs, Claire Rivero, Tuesdays/Thursdays, Sept. 16-Oct. 9 and Oct. 14-Nov. 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $200 each session.
