Kona garden tour

Bishop Museum offers visitors a free tour of native Hawaiian plants Sept. 13 in South Kona.

The 1 1/2-hour tour begins 10 a.m. at the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden and features fragrant alula, a rare plant that grows wild on the steep cliffs of Kauai and Molokai.

A $4 donation per person is suggested.

The facility also offers a workshop on kalo, or taro, propagation from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 26.

Cost is free for Bishop Museum Association members and $26 for nonmembers.

Labor Day at the lake

The lakeside lanai at Kemoo Farms will be rocking from afternoon to night Sunday to celebrate the holiday weekend. Along with its fourth annual chili cook-off, there'll be music from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. played by the likes of El Conjunto Tropical, White Lines, Go Jimmy Go, Pimpbot, Hellbound Hounds, Melodious Solutions and more.
