Ala Wai watershed
projects sought

The Hawaii Nature Center is inviting proposals for community projects that improve water quality in the Ala Wai watershed, Ala Wai Canal and near-shore waters of Waikiki and Ala Moana.

The center has set aside $200,000 from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant to support projects that are sustainable, innovative, locally based, citizen-run and promote a greater awareness and understanding of the ancient Hawaiian ahupuaa land-management concept.

Through its 2003 Community Projects Program, the Hawaii Nature Center will award up to $50,000 per project to eligible community groups and organizations.

Projects approved for grants by the Hawaii Community Services Council, the former fiscal agent for the Ala Wai Watershed Association, that never received the money are eligible to reapply through the Hawaii Nature Center.

Possible projects could include but are not limited to the installation of vegetated buffers and swales, stream bank restoration, beach or stream cleanups, trail restoration efforts, watershed stewardship, and protection of native species and their habitats.

Projects should be able to be successfully completed by April 30.

The deadline for proposals is Saturday.
