Iolani's Nata Akamu grabbed the jersey of McKinley's Michael Vasconcellos trying to tackle him.

McKinley wins
with 1-2 punch

You can almost hear a whizzing sound when McKinley quarterback Abel Werner throws the ball or runs past an opponent, but rivals would be wise not to forget the thud of running back Michael Vasconcellos.

Vasconcellos rammed his way for 136 yards and scored two first-half touchdowns as the Tigers held on for a 25-12 victory over Iolani last night at Aloha Stadium in the marquee game of the Father Bray Classic.

"It was nail-biter, and I never thought it would finish like that," McKinley coach William Moeava said.

The Tigers took a 25-0 lead after three quarters and let the Raiders back in the game with two final-period scores. "We got off to a fast start, but we've got to cut down on our mistakes late in the game."

The Raiders had first-half trouble figuring out who to key on in the opening nonleague game for both teams. When they went for Werner, Vasconcellos put the hurt on them. When they went for Vasconcellos, Werner scrambled to find the open man.

Werner, the Tigers' senior signal-caller, threw for 145 yards on 18-for-26 passing and drilled two TD strikes, including the game's first score -- an 8-yarder to Iakopo Taumua.

Vasconcellos finished off the next two McKinley possessions with touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards in the second quarter for an 18-0 halftime lead. Tony Sefo set up Vasconcellos' second TD by intercepting a pass by Iolani starting quarterback Peter Heimerdinger and returning it 49 yards to the Raider 13.

"They're (Werner and Vasconcellos) my two horses and we will use them to get done what we need to get done," said Moeava, who was coaching in his first varsity game.

Iolani's first-half offensive troubles were due in part to the omnipresent Tigers defensive line led by the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Randy Faletoi. Linemen Dixson Lauofo, Jeremiah Mata and Moses Ngauamo and linebackers Richard Kaluna and Shem Kaolulo sacked two Raider quarterbacks -- Heimerdinger and backup Kiran Kepoo.

"McKinley is a helluva football team," Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "They're as tough as I thought they'd be. They're a big, athletic, seasoned team."

The Tigers made it 25-0 late in the third quarter as Werner capped a 71-yard drive with a 9-yard TD toss to Chris Quiocho.

But the Raiders roared back, and running back Raynold Stowers and linebacker John Takamura led the way.

Stowers finished with a game-high 182 yards rushing -- 156 in the second half. Takamura had an interception, a fumble recovery and an onside kick recovery in the final 12 minutes.

Takamura's pick of Werner led to Iolani's first TD -- Heimerdinger's 15-yard run. Brad Nagasako's fumble recovery led to the Raiders' second score -- Paul Bennett's 56-yard catch-and-run of a Heimerdinger aerial.

With a light second-half rain falling, McKinley veered away from its patented passing game.

"Our adrenaline was pumping (for the first three quarters) and then we got tired," Werner said. "I take it upon myself for our breakdown because I'm supposed to be a leader. So I'm down on myself for getting a little jittery. But a win is a win."

After Takamura's onside recovery, Stowers sped for a 50-yard gain, and Iolani got as far as the McKinley 2, but couldn't score on four downs with about a minute left.
