‘Showoff’ has cars, models

FAST CARS and hot models return to the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this weekend for the "Street Car Showoff v5.0." Car show entrants will have a chance at taking home top honors in one of more than two dozen classifications, including best streetcar, best team entry, best girl racer entry and best sport bike entry.

Doors open at 6 p.m. tomorrow night and 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the fun lasts until 11 p.m. both days. On Sunday the show will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The obligatory DJ and MC battles, bikini and booty contests and autograph sessions with drop-dead beautiful import models (this year it's Kaylani Lei and Masuimi Max) are also planned; surf over to www.streetcarshowoff.com for complete details ...

CLUB PAUAHI will serve up a mixed plate of indie pop / rock and art installations tomorrow night when "Avant Pop 'Art' Part Two" kicks off at 8 p.m.

Expanding on the recurring "Avant Pop" parties that take place on a pretty regular basis, tomorrow's party will include artwork by Kashious Clay, Willie Branlund, Aaron Lee, James Nakashima, sevensectorseven, thefourteen.400 and others. DJs Kai and Monkey will be joined in Club Pauahi's front room by Port Guyana, The Protein Self, teradactyl and Walks Among Us to provide a soundtrack for the evening. Five bucks gets you into this 18-and-over party; call 521-7252 ...

ON SATURDAY, head down to The Beach House next to Aloha Tower Marketplace for the finale of the "2003 Summer Surf Trilogy" music series.

For those of you who hate paying cover or following a dress code, this 21-and-over party is right up your alley. It's absolutely free to get into The Beach House all night long, and there will be $2 drinks on special as well. Throw in two stages of live entertainment with Hawaiian Time, Inoa'ole, Koa'uka, One More Round, Simple Souls and Ten Feet, and I'm starting to wonder why I haven't spent more time down there myself over the past few months ...

ANOTHER CAN'T-MISS event that comes to an end in August is the annual "Beer Fest" at Ryan's Bar and Grill in Ward Centre. Although a night of drinking hard-to-find beers can put a sizable dent in your wallet, just suck it up (both literally and figuratively) and enjoy the opportunity to travel around the world without having to leave your table.

Live entertainment is also featured on select nights during "Beer Fest" -- check out Nueva Vida on Monday, or stop by on Wednesday for an island vibe with Sean Na'auao and Ten Feet. Call 591-9132 ...
