Mullen wins Assistant Pro title

Jerry Mullen shot a 71 yesterday to edge Kevin Hayashi by one stroke at the Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the Ko Olina Golf Club.

Mullen represented Oahu Country Club and finished the 36-hole tournament with a total of 141. Hayashi, an assistant pro at the Mauna Kea Resort, entered the second round with the lead after firing a 69 in the opening round and shot a 73 yesterday to finish at 142.

Mullen won the $2,200 first prize and qualified for the 2003 Taylor Made-Adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship set for Nov. 6-9 at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Kamehameha hosts volleyball invitational

Two-time defending state champion Kamehameha hosts its men's volleyball invitational Friday and Saturday at Kekuhaupio Gym.

The 12-team tournament is split into three pools. Joining the host Warriors in Pool A are Iolani, Leilehua and Kamehameha-Big Island. Pool B consists of Kauai, Damien, Punahou and Kamehameha's junior varsity team. Competing in Pool C are Hawaii Baptist, Saint Louis, Waimea and Baldwin.

Matches start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Billfish tournament opens on the Big Island

Tournament Anglers racked up 564 points on Monday to move into first place of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off the Big Island.

Tournament Anglers landed a 123-pound ahi an hour before the end of fishing to move into first place.

Ray Hill of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club of Australia recorded the biggest catch of the day, a 323-pound blue marlin. The team was awarded 100 points for the day's biggest catch and is in second place with 423 points.

The 44th annual tournament is being staged at Honokohau Harbor and continues at 7 a.m. today. The event runs through Friday.

Sanders, Yancey win Half Ironman

Jeff Sanders of Maui and Jenna Yancey of Honolulu were the overall winners in the Windward Half Ironman on Sunday.

Sanders won the men's competition with a time of 4 hours, 28 minutes, 8 seconds. Tai Blechta finished 15 minutes after Sanders to place second.

Yancey finished first among the women with a time of 4:58:33. Samantha Khoo came in second at 5:08:43.

New sports radio show hits airwaves Friday

The Hawaii Sports Rap radio show makes its debut this week on KUMU II 1500-AM.

The show, which is hosted by Randy Miyamoto and Scott Kaalele, runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday.

Friday's guests include former Hawaii football player Jeff Sydner and former Minnesota Vikings star Joey Browner. Scheduled to take part in Sunday's show are Hawaii football coach June Jones and HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya.

Hawaii sending 9 teams to USA League Tennis

Nine island teams have advanced to the national championship round of USA League Tennis after winning their respective divisions of the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section last weekend on Maui.

Winning the women's divisions were: Networks of Maui, 2.5; MD Quackettes of Oahu, 3.0; Menace and Me from Oahu, 3.5; Any Place from Oahu, 4.0; and Maui Pupule, 4.5. The men's champions were Way Out of Oahu, 3.0; Hui Holomua of Oahu, 3.5; U.S.D.A. Select of Kauai, 4.0; and Predators from West Hawaii.

The teams will go on to various tournaments in Arizona and California. The 3.0 tournament is scheduled for Sept. 18-21, the 2.5 and 3.5 tournaments are Oct. 2-5, and the 4.0 and 4.5 tournaments are Oct. 9-12.
