City issues jellyfish warning
for Oahu’s beaches today

Box jellyfish are expected at Oahu's beaches today and tomorrow, and the city's Ocean Safety Division is advising people who don't want to be stung to stay out of the water.

Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Beach are the most commonly affected areas. Stings have also been reported at Hanauma Bay, Pokai Bay, Makaha Surfing Beach and Waimea Bay, and occasionally at other north and west shore beaches.

Lifeguards will post signs when box jellyfish are sighted. Some jellyfish may remain through Friday, but they are expected to be mostly gone by Saturday.

Swimmers who are stung should flush the wound with white vinegar, and seek medical attention if they have trouble breathing, muscle spasms or persistent pain.

A recorded report on ocean conditions and warnings is available at 922-3888, extension 51.
