Lingle, Aiona 'Talk Story' sessions set

Gov. Linda Lingle and Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona will be holding more "Talk Story" sessions around the state in the next few weeks.

Lingle has been meeting with residents about issues of general interest, while Aiona has been gathering information for a drug summit Sept. 15-17. The sessions will be held:

>> Aug. 27: Lingle will speak at the Pearlridge Elementary School cafeteria.
>> Sept. 2: Aiona will speak at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School cafeteria on Kauai.
>> Sept. 3: Lingle will speak at the Kahului School cafeteria on Maui.
>> Sept. 9: Lingle will speak at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Campus Center dining room.
>> Oct. 7: Lingle will speak at the Kaiser High School cafeteria.

All sessions will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mokuleia woman has been missing since July 22

Police are searching for a 33-year-old Mokuleia woman who has been missing for about a month.

Police said yesterday that Kelly Sussel was last seen at Pizza Bob's in Haleiwa where she had dinner with friends and family on July 22 at about 10 p.m.

Sussel is a 5-foot-7 Filipino-Hawaiian woman who weighs 153 pounds and has brown wavy hair. Police said she may be driving a gray Nissan Altima, with license JZG-502. She may be in the company of her boyfriend, Michael Fierro, who also hasn't been seen since last July.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 529-3115 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Young swimmer dies from head injuries

A 14-year-old Waianae boy died Monday night after being hospitalized for head injuries he received while swimming in waters near Ulehawa Beach Park in Nanakuli.

Siofio Bloomfield was swimming with friends at a popular swimming spot called Channels, less than a mile from the beach park on Sunday about 2:54 p.m.

Authorities said the boy may have hit his head on some rocks. When officials got to him, Bloomfield did not have a pulse and was not breathing, according to Emergency Medical Services officials. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center-West where he died Monday night.

Rescue crews search trail for missing man

Rescue crews plan to resume their search this morning for a 45-year-old man whose backpack was found along the Crouching Lion Trail in Kahana Valley yesterday.

According to fire Capt. Emmit Kane, two hikers discovered an abandoned backpack about four hours into the trail at the 2,000-foot level at 3:15 p.m. yesterday. The backpack contained a wallet belonging to Phillip Milos, who lives on Kapiolani Boulevard, Kane said.

Police said Milos, who is a 6-foot, 230-pound Caucasian male, was last seen outside his apartment building on Friday at 8 a.m.

Police and Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews as well as Air One searched the trail near where the hikers found the backpack from 5 p.m. to about 8 p.m. Rescue crews will continue searching the ridgeline today, police said.

Man dies after van smashes into his SUV

A 27-year-old Kekaha man was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in critical condition on Monday after his sports utility vehicle was broadsided by a van on Kuhio Highway, according to Kauai police.

Police said the SUV was turning onto Kuhio Highway from Mailihuna Road about 3:32 p.m. when a van traveling south on the highway hit the SUV.

The hospital would not release an updated condition for the SUV driver.

Police snag dozens in 'enforcement project'

Big Island police conducted a speed, drunk-driving and seat-belt "enforcement project" from Thursday to Sunday that resulted in scores of citations and arrests.

Police said 121 citations were issued to motorists in the Kona, Hilo and Puna districts who failed to use seatbelts. Three citations also were issued for failing to use a child-restraint seat for children 4 years old or younger.

The project also resulted in 86 traffic-related charges and 13 arrests for traffic offenses or outstanding warrants.

Moreover, 14 juveniles were arrested for underage drinking and two adults were arrested for drunk driving. During the project, police spotted a juvenile runaway.

Police also discovered that two vehicle safety-inspection stations were allegedly issuing improper safety stickers, said Sgt. Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section.
