Those ‘funny’
aloha shirts
to the rescue

IT quickly became apparent to Mike Kercheval that he was overdressed when on Maui for the International Council of Shopping Center's annual Hawaii/Pacific Idea Exchange. Kercheval was only in the room for 30 seconds before realizing he was the only guy there wearing a suit, white dress shirt and tie. Being president of ICSC, Kercheval had to take the podium, apologize for his spiffy attire and commented that this being his first trip to Hawaii, he didn't even own one of those "funny shirts." To the rescue rode Reyn's honcho Mike Jenness who provided him with a shirt and an invite to visit the store. On his return to N.Y., Kercheval wrote to thank Jenness for being his "wardrobe reconnaissance," and said the Reyn's Spooner shirt he'd been given and continued to wear in the Big Apple and around his neighborhood in Princeton, had made him something of a trendsetter ...

ONE of the more unusual "hula halau" groups to perform in Hawaii of late consisted of the mothers of professional basketball players. Their leader was Janet Hill, mother of NBA star Grant Hill. The moms were part of the "Halftime Hula Hoopla" event at the Hawaii Convention Center, a fund-raiser for the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii. There was also a fashion show with mothers of NBA stars wearing the jerseys of their famous sons. Janet Hill and Robin Roberts of ABC's "Good Morning America" and ESPN Sports moderating ... The Lahaina restaurant Kimo's received kudos from NBA star Shane Battier when the Memphis Grizzlies' forward scored a basket -- of fish and chips ...

A pair of Masini's

THE ever-busy April Masini slated a seminar for men only called "Dating Out of Your League" in L.A. on Sept. 16 and, possibly because of the photo of the knockout blonde in the printed brochure, the seminar was an instant sellout. The reaction was so great that she's repeating it in October, November and December. April has also signed a book contract with Phenix & Phenix to publish a book, "Confessions of a High Voltage Blonde," which could have local repercussions ... Meanwhile, ex-husband Al Masini and his beautiful bride, Charlyn Shizue Honda, were at the Perry & Price 20th anniversary breakfast, and Charlyn tells me their new showplace home on Hawaii Loa Ridge (not far from the home Al & April built) should be ready to occupy in January or February ...

WANT to know what J.Lo and Britney are wearing? You can find out by strolling through Kahala Mall and into Shasa Emporium where there's a collection of magazine photos of what celebrities are wearing and where to find a similar outfit in the store ...

Scooooore

IT couldn't have been better timing for Peter Shaindlin, who takes over as COO of the Halekulani on Sept. 1. Travel + Leisure just announced their "Best Awards" and the Halekulani came in as not only tops in Hawaii, but No. 4 in the world. No. 1 went to the Peninsula in Bangkok. Another Hawaii property in the tops in the world listing was the Four Seasons, Hualalai at No. 7. Also scoring up there were the Four Seasons Wailea, Fairmont Wailea and Hyatt Regency Kauai ...
