Toyama after win and Tiger's record

COLUMBUS, N.J. >> Kaneohe's Travis Toyama started off today with an eight-stroke advantage, and with not only a shot to win, but at history, at the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic.

After shooting a second consecutive 5-under par 66 in yesterday's third round, he entered today's final with a chance to break Tiger Woods' event record for margin of victory (9 strokes).

Toyama had five birdies and no bogeys to take control after starting the day tied for the lead.

"(Wednesday) was a good day because I scrambled well; I got up and down from pretty much everywhere," Toyama said in a press release. "Today I didn't have to worry about scrambling. I was putting for birdies a lot. ... My ball striking was better today."

Hilo team advances to Senior LLWS semifinals

BANGOR, Maine >> Matt Haasenritter drove in two runs and Hawaii took advantage of five errors to defeat Maine, 8-6, in pool play yesterday at the Senior Little League World Series.

The team of 15- and 16-year-olds from Hilo finished 3-1 in pool play and advanced to today's semifinal game with Curacao, Venezuela. In the other semifinal, Iowa takes on Virginia.

The winners advance to tomorrow's championship.

Haasenritter was the only Hawaii player to pair hits, going 3-for-4. He drove in a run in the three-run first and the last of Hilo's runs in the fifth.

Pitcher Ryan Pagan scattered seven hits, walking three and striking out one.

Vulcan volleyball alumnae match set

The Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball season opens Aug. 23 with the annual alumnae match set for 7 p.m.

"We're an extension of their accomplishments and they are an extension of our program," first-year Vulcan coach Julie Morgan said of the program's former players. "I don't look at this as a match as much as I look at it as a way to involve them and the community into our program."

Alumnae interested in playing should attend Sunday's 3 p.m. practice at the Haili Gym, or call Lyndell Lindsay at 961-3633.

Admission is a $1 donation at the door. Prior to the match, fans can meet the team from 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Maui Invitational to finally include Hawaii

The Hawaii men's basketball team makes its first appearance in the Maui Invitational, taking on Santa Clara in the nightcap on Nov. 24.

Host Chaminade opens the 20th annual tournament with a 9 a.m. game against Villanova. the other games have Dayton facing Central Michigan at noon and Ohio State meeting San Diego State at 4 p.m.

Play continues through the Nov. 26 championship.

Perkins among favorites in Hawaiian Open

Former world longboard champions Bonga Perkins of Hawaii and Joel Tudor of California are touted as favorites, along with Hawaii's Rusty Keaulana and Joey Valentin, in the converse Hawaiian Open tomorrow though Sunday at Ala Moana Bowls.

The Hawaiian Open, with a $10,000 purse, with $4,000 to the winner, is the second of three legs that will crown the U.S. Pro Longboard men's and women's champions. The field features a host of champions and big names, including several local contenders and an MTV "Surf Girl."

Hawaii flying disc player is gold medalist

Veteran Hawaii flying disc (Frisbee) player Lori Daniels won a gold medal in team women's double disc court last month at the 2003 World Flying Disc Federation's Flying Disc Games. She also paired to finish third in women's freestyle.

In Monday's Hawaii State Flying Disc Tournament, Sjur Soleng won the open Disc Golf event, Lori Daniels took the women's division. Kirk Hottendorf was the open Maximum Time Aloft champ, while Hilo's Maureen Duffy was the women's winner. And Steve Goodwin of Hilo won the Accuracy open championship. Jodi Lui was the women's champ.

Na Holo Kai Challenge set for Saturday

The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association Race Series will feature the Aston Na Holo Kai Challenge tomorrow. Sailing canoes will race from Haleiwa to Nawiliwili, Kauai.

The HSCA races are "iron-style," meaning crews do not switch during the course.

Hawaii-Japan goodwill games start tonight

The Goodwill High School Baseball Series, which dates to 1953, continues tonight on Maui and comes to Murakami Stadium Sunday night.

An all-star team from Japan meets the Maui All-Stars at 6 p.m. tonight at Maehara Stadium and again at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The Japanese team then travels to Oahu to face Kalani High School at Les Murakami Stadium, with games Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The series was one of the first service projects of the 442nd Veterans Club. Japan leads 59-42-10 over 50 years.
