Arts Academy gets
$20,000 from YSL, Honu


The Academy of Arts received cash gifts totaling $20,000 this week, $10,000 each from Yves Saint Laurant and Honu Group. That made Academy director Stephen Little's day. Sylvia Akaka made the presentation for YSL and Mona Abadir for Honu at a preview showing of art that is on sale. The Wednesday affair, with champagne and martinis, DJ Keith Kandell and a tasty spread by Chef Mike Nevin, was one of the Acad-emy's Showcase 2003 fund-raising events. YSL's Garine Zerounian flew in from New York with the firm's latest fashions that were modeled by Yingying Lee and Onaona Miller. Yingying and Onaona -- interesting names. Showcase chairs are Erin Choy and Susan Wo. Today's art sale is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 400 works by more than 100 Hawaii artists will be available. There is no admission fee for the art sale or to enter and place a silent auction bid on the Martin Blank original glass sculpture, valued at more than $30,000 ...

Dishing up Nick's golfers

Serving excellent food is the main focus of Nick's Fishmarket but golf is the name of the game for several members of the staff, starting with Greg Norman look-alike Ben Dowling, G.M. of the Waikiki establishment. Ben has an impressive 2 handicap. But two golfers on the staff are professionals, Gerry Mulleins and Ivan Cunningham. Ben says they won't even give him his two strokes when they play. Another single handicapper on the Nick's team is Bill Murphy, who caddies for top PGA golfers when they compete here. Hearing that Bill is claiming a 10 handicap nowadays, Ben almost choked and gasped for air. All of the Nick's golfers were happy that senior PGA pros Bill Rogers and Bruce Lietzke chose to dine at Nick's recently ...

STILL SWINGING: Sam Choy's Big Man Golf Tourney, an Alzheimer's Association Aloha Chapter benefit, is not totally serious about that "Big Man" biz. Women are welcome. And although a three-person team is supposed to weigh a total of 700 pounds to get mulligans, golfers can weigh in wearing golf shoes, and with clubs, bags, canned goods and even bags of rice.
