headlines concert
at church to aid
music scholarship


Jimmy Borges & Friends will change a Niu Valley church into a concert hall next weekend.

The jazz singer will star in a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 in Kilohana United Methodist Church, 5829 Mahimahi St. His "friends" will include singer Shari Lynn, pianist Betty Loo Taylor, saxophonist Gabe Baltazar, bassist Steve Jones and percussionist Noel Okimoto.

Also performing will be student pianists Morgan Pajo, 13, and Mitchell Kuga, 16, and clarinet student Allison Yoshida, 14, recipients of the Rita Thompson Music Scholarship, which is funded by proceeds of the annual concert.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students and may be reserved by calling 373-3373.

Information on the scholarship, offered to students of musical instruments and not limited to church members, is also available from the church office.

The scholarship is named for Rita Thompson, organist at the church for 25 years.
