Yokomoto up by 2 strokes on the Big Island

Beau Yokomoto of Pearl Country Club shot 1-under par 71 yesterday in the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship at Kailua-Kona.

Yokomoto got through the first nine holes in 34 strokes and carded a 37 on the back nine.He was the only player under par. Casey Paulson and Kevin Hayashi were tied for second at 73.

The top seven golfers after 36 holes will represent Hawaii in the Western Regional CPC at the Indian Summer Golf & Country Club in Olympia, Washington in October.

Pruett's grand slam keeps Pearl City on a roll

Alika Pruett stroked a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Pearl City a 5-3 win over Oregon in the Little League Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif., yesterday. Oregon led 3-1 in the final inning before Pruett, who doubled earlier in the game, ended it and made a winner of pitcher Bryson Namba.

Hawaii has soccer scrimmage canceled

Santa Clara's soccer team pulled out of its scrimmage with Hawaii scheduled for Aug. 21 due to scheduling problems, leaving both teams with 19 games. The Broncos were unable to drop one of their regular season matches to make the scrimmage possible. The scrimmage would have counted against the NCAA limit of 20 matches, but not against either team's record.
