Blast bows out of WPFL

The Hawaii-based Pacific Blast women's professional football team joined the Austin Rage in withdrawing from the Women's Professional Football league this season.

Both franchises cited limited financial resources and will consider joining the league again for the 2004 season.

"I have supported the WPFL for years," Blast owner Nicole Wylie said in a release. "The WPFL has a wonderful vision and being in the company of such extraordinary women will stay with me always."

Pearl City advances in Little League tournament

Alika Pruett held East Boise American of Idaho to one hit, and she hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the sixth to help Pearl City team to a 2-1 win in the Little League West Region tournament at San Bernardino, Calif., yesterday.

Catcher Bryson Namba ended the game by scoring from third on a passed ball with one out. Pearl City plays Oregon tomorrow at 2 p.m. HST.

Hilo still winning: Hilo's 12-under baseball team shut out host San Luis Obispo 3-0 in the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional masters tournament to advance in the winner's bracket yesterday.

Jeremy Crivello allowed only a single hit and struck out seven batters in five innings to get the win. He also drove in a pair of runs. Hilo will play Northern California tomorrow.

Jones, Miano to visit QB Club

Hawaii football coach June Jones will headline tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club along with defensive backs coach Rich Miano.

Also appearing will be Nate Smith, president and CEO of Oceanic Time Warner Cable Television as well as National Veteran's Soccer Cup chairman Tim Busch.

Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu with the program to follow at noon.

Mililani out of softball tournament

Mililani Prep was stopped in the fourth round of the American Softball Association 18-under tournament at Garland, Texas, yesterday.

Mililani lost 3-1 to Tucson to fall into the loser's bracket before taking the Illinois Spirit to extra innings in an elimination game. Mililani allowed a pair of runs in the top of the eighth but could only score one in the bottom, losing 2-1.
