An Italian outing

A bit of bocce and plenty of pasta are planned for "Something Italian," Sunday's gathering of the Friends of Italy Society of Hawaii.

The Friends meet monthly, but this weekend's gathering marks the annual Pasta Cook-Off and Bocce Tournament, a double does of food and fun.

Cook-off categories are antipasto, pasta sauce (you bring the sauce; they supply the noodles) and dessert. Judging is by vote of members.

The event runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Paki Hale, 3840 Paki Ave., just mauka of Kapiolani Park. Bocce lessons, competition and a potluck buffet are all part of the celebration.

Cost is $10 for non-members; free for members who bring a dish. Join the organization at the park and your admission will be free. Call 737-9555.

Arboretum classes

The Lyon Arboretum offers the following cooking classes in August. Call 988-0456.

Scandinavian Summer: Chef Göran Streng of the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki focuses on salads and "knife and fork" sandwiches; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. next Wednesday. Cost is $28; $25 for arboretum members.

Fish Trio: Chef Hiroshi Fukui of L'Uraku prepares miso butterfish, as well as dishes used moi and kahala; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 8. Cost is $28; $25 members.

Cook's Tour of Chinatown Markets: Thanh Mougeot leads a trip through Chinatown in search of produce, specialty ingredients and fresh fish; meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at Hotel and Maunakea streets. Cost is $12; $10 members. Lunch will be at a Vietnamese lunch (cost not included).

Arthritis honoree

John Sutton will be the honoree at the Arthritis Foundation's fourth annual "I'll remember You" fund-raiser Sunday at Oahu Country Club.

The event begins with a 4:30 p.m. cocktail reception, followed by three hours of heavy pupus, musical entertainment and prize drawings, with Trini Kaopuiki emceeing.

Sutton has served on the foundation's Board of Directors for nearly 15 years, sharing his commitment to support arthritis research. His mother-in-law has battled rheumatoid arthritis for many years.

Arthritis is the No. 1 cause of work disability in the United States, affecting 70 million, or one in four Americans. In Hawaii, an estimated 189,000 have some form of the more than 120 diseases known as arthritis.

Tickets for the benefit are $100. Call 596-2900.

Bobcat's back

Bobcat Goldthwait: Performs Aug. 29.


Bobcat Goldthwait returns to Honolulu for a performance at Pipeline Cafe on Aug. 29. Tickets, $20 general and $25 for table seating, go on sale Friday for the 8 p.m. show.

The comedian will also head to Maui for a show at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Aug. 30, when doors will open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show. Tickets on Maui are $10, $20 and $25 and also go on sale Friday.

Goldthwait's one-of-a-kind, multi-octave voice has given life to characters on shows such as "The Simpsons," "Beavis and Butthead" and the Disney series "Hercules," pushing him beyond the comedy-club circuit.

Watch for Bobcat as a bellman, he's sure to get the laughs in Warner Bros. "The Grind," due in August.

Most recently, he's directed sketches for Dave Chappelle's new self-named series on Comedy Central. He also recently directed and edited segments for Comedy Central's "The Man Show" and "Strip Mall." He also appeared on FOX's "That '70s Show" and in the Ted Demme film "Blow."

'Stone Reader'

A documentary about Dow Mossman, a writer who went missing after the publication of his first novel, "The Stones of Summer."
