Cutting-edge paper

Indigenous craftsmen and artists from around the world will be revealing the essence of paper and paper making during TEMARI's "Kapa, Washi, Paper" conference, a weeklong series of events that begin Sunday.

"Contemporary PaperWorks," an exhibit of pieces by invited paper artists, will be on display through the week at the Linekona Art Center. An opening reception will be held 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Hands-on demonstrations and talks will take place all week, ending with the free "Making Kapa, Washi, Paper" festival, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at Linekona. TEMARI, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, is presenting the festival, which will feature art activities, the Paper Store, music and food.

In addition, Drachen Foundation kite artist Greg Kono will visit from Seattle to demonstrate paper "flying" in the sky, joining an international group of artists from Japan, Spain, France, Japan, Korea, the mainland and Hawaii.

Call 536-4566.
