PROTEST TARGETS
MILITARY USE OF MAKUA

Several community groups held a sign-waving rally yesterday afternoon outside the federal building on Ala Moana to protest the U.S. Army's continued use of Makua Valley as a training site in the wake of a brush fire that destroyed nearly 2,500 acres on Tuesday. Among the protesters were Maryjane Ganibe, right, and Idea Canevascini. Protesters also sought an end to plans to bring a Stryker brigade to Hawaii.

Giant, massive and lopsided pumpkins participated in "The Giant Pumpkin Contest" yesterday at the Hawaii State Farm Fair. Terry Sekioka, of the UH College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, put an orange-ribbon prize on a 185-pound pumpkin grown by Duane Miyasato, from Kalaheo, Kauai.

TO DEBUT IN SCHOOLS

The arrival of Custer, a specially trained golden retriever, turned a few heads yesterday in the interisland terminal at Honolulu Airport, including that of 5-year-old Clayton Tofaeono, right. Trained to sniff out drugs, alcohol and explosives, 2-year-old Custer will be based on Maui with his handler, Whitney White, of Interquest Detection Canines of Hawaii. White said Custer will be working at the Academy of the Pacific, and she hopes to extend the company's services to state public schools.
