Bargains galore at seasonal sales

Summer sales are turning island places of worship into bargain shopper destinations.

Today in Kailua, the "Christmas in July" sale is on from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 114 Makawao St. The sale of crafts and other gift items will benefit the parish outreach program.

Next Saturday, the annual rummage sale will fill several rooms of the Harris United Methodist Church complex, 20 S. Vineyard Blvd. Open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., it will feature books, household goods, toys and clothing. Proceeds will support Methodist Women's mission projects.

An Aug. 3 sale at the Honolulu Community Jewish Preschool will offer furniture, household items, toys and books. The rummage sale will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Temple Emanu-El grounds, 2550 Pali Highway. It will benefit programs at the school. Items may be donated at the temple from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Meditators welcome at silent anti-war session

An Insight Meditation Retreat next Saturday on "Ending War Once and for All" is open to beginning and experienced meditators.

Gavin Harrison, author of "In the Lap of the Buddha," will conduct the silent session from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Diamond Sangha Palolo Zen Center, 2747 Waiomao Road. Harrison, a recipient of the Dalai Lama's "Unsung Heroes of Compassion" award, has led retreats around the world.
