Help Make-A-Wish with wacky comic Rip Taylor

Comedian Rip Taylor will scoop ice cream for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Coldstone Creamery on Kalakaua Avenue.

Taylor will be offering samples as part of the second annual World's Largest Ice Cream Social, a nationwide benefit sponsored by Coldstone Creamery. Customers will make a donation to Make-A-Wish in exchange for their ice cream.

Taylor, who's appeared on Broadway and as a regular guest on "Hollywood Squares," is starring in the film "Alex & Emma," directed by Rob Reiner, and on television in "Adventures with Bonnie."

Lessons in kaiseki

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii plans an exploration of the refined Japanese tradition of kaiseki with a fund-raising dinner on July 30 at L'Uraku restaurant.

Kaiseki is a multicourse meal of small plates that reflects the seasons, artistically and in terms of the ingredients featured. The courses are traditionally served with sake.

The society, given its mission of strengthening ties between the United States and Japan, plans seven Pan-Asian courses, to be paired with wines.

The cost is $250, and proceeds will benefit the society's educational programs.
