A taste of Molokai

Kanemitsu Bakery makes the trip across the Molokai Channel, bringing a collection of lavosh and fresh breads to the Molokai Festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Ward Warehouse.

A new coffee line from Molokai Coffee Plantation as well as a variety of locally produced salts will also be on display, along with arts and crafts from the Friendly Isle.

Entertainment will be provided by Moana's Hula Halau and Ke Kuahine O Molokai, the Mobettah Band, Uncle William Aki & Ohana and BYOB.

Comics 'n' cheese

More than $10,000 worth of rare comic books will be up for bid at "Say Cheese," a benefit for the Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom.

The silent auction will include DC and Marvel comics that were donated to the event and will be sold in 10 lots. A seven-day Hawaii cruise, neighbor island packages and unique wines also will be on the block.

The evening's menu features more than 40 handcrafted cheeses, along with complementary wines and dishes by Sheraton chef Daniel Delbrel.

Cost is $60 in advance; $70 at the door. Call 544-3385.

"Say Cheese" is Part 2 of the rehabilitation center's "Joy of Food & Wine" benefit. Part 1, a dinner Friday night with chefs Tim and Liza Goodell of the Aubergine, Troquet, Viceroy, Red Pearl and Lodge restaurants in Southern California, is sold out.

But for another shot at the Goodells' food, visit the Halekulani Saturday night, when the couple joins chef Yves Garnier at La Mer. The contemporary French cuisine of all three chefs will be featured a la carte. For example: appetizers of Wild Hamachi Braised in Duck Fat, Carolina Shrimp with Caramelized Cauliflower; entrées of Smoked Bobwhite Quail and Braised Veal Cheeks; desserts of cardamom Pots de Creme and Valrhona Chocolate Souffle Cake. Entrée prices run $35 to $41. Call 923-2311.

United we dine

Chefs from throughout the Big Island's Kohala Coast will cook for "An Evening in Paradise," a fund-raiser for the Hawaii Island United Way, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 26 at the Fairmont Orchid hotel.

Participating chefs include Daniel Thiebaut of Daniel Thiebaut's in Waimea, Jackie Lau of Roy's Waikoloa Bar & Grill and chefs from resorts all along the coast.

Jamba Juice's "Banana Man Chase" takes off at 7 a.m. Saturday from Magic Island. Runners, walkers and strollers will chase five triathletes in foam banana costumes through the 5K race. Entry fee is $30, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Sign up at any Jamba Juice or call 548-0588.
