Shibuya out in front
after first day

Randy Shibuya shot a 3-under 68 yesterday to take the first-round lead of the 40th annual Oahu Country Club Invitational.

One of only two golfers to break par, Shibuya managed six birdies, including three over the final four holes, to take a two-shot advantage over Johnny McCray.

His 1-under 70 left him alone in second place. There are four golfers tied for third with even-par 71s. They are Norman-Ganin Asao, Alvin Okada, Marc Rosen and Steve Yogi.

Defending champion Ryan Koshi finished with a 5-over 76. He trails Shibuya, who won the 2000 Manoa Cup, by eight shots and will need a good round this morning to avoid missing the cut.

The top 35 players and ties will advance to tomorrow's final round that begins at 11 a.m. At this point, there are 39 golfers who shot 76 or better. Included in that 5-over group is Kellen-Floyd Asao, who won the 2003 Manoa Cup on this same course last month.
