The City Council approved permits yesterday that will allow the Turtle Bay Resort to continue with the final leg of its $60 million renovation.

City & County of Honolulu

Turtle Bay's plans call for a new ballroom, meeting rooms, office space and renovations to its Ocean Villas complex.

Employees, area businesses and community leaders testified in favor of the special management area use permit and shoreline setback variance, citing economic benefits to the hotel and North Shore.

But concerns were also raised by fishing enthusiasts and others who said that the hotel has prevented public access to the shoreline.

As conditions of the permits, the hotel must increase public parking spaces to 40 from the current 18, allow the public use of restrooms and shower areas, and improve shoreline access signs.

The Council's permits measure will go to Mayor Jeremy Harris for his approval.
